The Woodend Community Association and Matt Doocey invite you to join us to Rally for our township. Support the Bypass to support our beautiful Woodend.
One of the biggest proponents of a bypass around the North Canterbury town of Woodend hopes a community event will send a clear message to the Government.
Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey is urging Woodend and Waimakariri residents to show their support for a Woodend Bypass at a “Rally for Woodend” on February 9.
While Doocey has been campaigning on the issue for years, the Government’s announcement to inject more funding to revisit road and rail projects had renewed the community’s energy.
“While the Government is currently reviewing its roading priorities, we need to make sure our voices are heard.”
Doocey said the idea for a rally came from a public meeting on SH1 safety issues last year.
“I believe daily traffic counts this year in Woodend will hit 20,000 vehicle movements a day. It’s just not safe with children expected to run the gauntlet to get to school every day and the elderly having to cross a state highway to get to public transport.
“Residents are fired up and they want to send Government a clear message that this project needs to be given the green light now.”
Doocey said the rally, which will be held at 12.30pm at Woodend’s Owen Stalker Park, would be a family friendly event with speeches, music and a barbecue.
People could show their interest on his Facebook page or just turn up on the day, he said.
